I have 30 years of experience working as a Freelancer on a wide range of projects as an Employer's Professional Quantity Surveyor, Contractors Quantity Surveyor and Groundworks Quantity Surveyor. I have also worked as an Estimator.
The nature of projects I've been involved with vary considerably, from domestic extensions to large scale construction and civil engineering projects throughout the country, with the roles lasting from pre-construction to post contract final accounts. I am a huge advocate of the bills of quantities which I feel should be adopted on all schemes, large or small. When a financial document is prepared and made as watertight as possible at the outset, it makes managing post contract variations less cumbersome on site. Also, value of a project doesn't necessarily correlate with complexity which is why a reliable cost control document is extremely important at the outset. Bills of quantities are the most robust in my opinion, from conception to completion and I would always recommend this to clients and contractors.
